Unit 3: Shopping

Safe Shopping
When buying items on the Internet, people should always be careful that their financial details are secure. Some companies take precautions to protect their customers. Amazon.com is an American e-commerce company based in Seattle, Washington. It was one of the major companies to sell goods over the Internet. Founded by Jeff Bezos in 1994 and launched in 1995, Amazon began as an online bookshop but soon diversified its product lines by adding VHSs, DVDs, music CDs, MP3s, computer software, video games, toys and more. Bezos chose the name"Amazon" because it started with the letter A, was symbolic of something big and was easy to spell. Amazon.com offers Safety and Security Tips. They advise shoppers to keep theirpassword private. When creating a password, they suggest using at least eight characters, including both letters and numbers, and advise people to frequently change their password. Amazon will never e-mail or call customers on the phone to ask for their password, credit card or bank account number.

Unit 2: Elections

The election for the president of the USA always takes place on the same Tuesday in November.
The goverment of the United States is made up of two elected bodies, the Senate and the House of Representatives.
Each of the 435 members of the House of Representatives represents a district. The population of the state determines the number of its representatives. Members are elected every two years. The Senate has only 100 members-two for each state, regardless of its size. Senators serve for six years, and every two years a third of their members are elected.
The House and the Senate are equal partners in legislation and a new law requires the consent of both bodies. However, each body also has got specific powers.

In Spain, general elections are held every four years. Each Spanish community also holds autonomous elections every four years. The government always chooses a Sunday as Election Day.

Your Task: As you know elections are coming in both countries.
Read the texts and watch the videos to know more about this.
There is a historical reason to the USA elections being celebrated on the same Tuesday in November.
Do you know it?

Presentation and General Instructions about the use of this blog, our blog.

I have designed this blog as a means of communication between you and me.
Some of the entries are just for you to read, have more information or simply enjoy some videos, etc...........
Other entries contain the word YOUR TASK and those are for you to do on Google Docs and send them to me: this is my gmail account junquerabeatriz037@gmail.com.
You will get a mark for that, being part of the formative evaluation, that is, 20% of the total mark.
The tasks must be sent on time, that is, before the end of each unit and you can also insert images, videos, anything that you consider suitable.
I hope you will take advantage of a tool that allows you to use your English in a different way.
I am waiting for your comments!

Unit 1: Breakfast: the most important meal of the day.

The name breakfast comes from two words- break and fast. During the night, we fast, so the first meal of the day breaks the fast. Modern breakfast cereals have replaced many of the traditional breakfast foods. A traditional British breakfast might include cooked cereal, fried bacon and eggs or sausages, toast and marmalade. In Scotland, cooked oatmeal, known as porridge, is still a popular breakfast food, traditionally served with salt rather than sugar.
Lunch is the meal served in the middle of the day across Britain. During the week, it tends to be a light meal, but sometimes at the weekend, families enjoy a big meal at lunchtime.
Supper is the evening meal. However, if it is a full meal with several courses, or a formal meal, it is referrred to as dinner.
In working-class areas, and in many parts of Scotland, there is a tradition known as high tea. It is served early in the evening and often includes cooked food of some sort.
In Britain, it is traditional to have afternoon tea around four o'clock in the afternoon. It usually consists of tea with biscuits or cake.
In recent years, a meal called brunch has become popular, often as a form of entertainment at the weekend. It's a cross between a large breakfast and a light lunch.
